While physical therapy does entail a level of pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone to achieve what you want, they need to know the difference between that and crossing the line over into harm. That requires that they pay close attention to what you say and how you act. You also need to watch how they act when you express an inability to do something.
You may think that this goes back to the communication part and while it does have an element of it, they need to prove that they listen and don’t just talk at you. Standing up for yourself is an important part of the give and take between the two of you.
Do not hesitate to listen to your gut throughout the process. If you feel uncomfortable that the physical therapist is not doing these things, then you need to have a frank conversation with them. They are supposed to work with you, not against you.
